Concept 1: Self Determination
Self determination is the process by which an country determines its own statehood and forms its own allegiances and government. So, the country breaks away from where it was attached to before and governs itself.
An example of this concept in a non-geographical idea is in the book, Lord of the Flies, where instead of following the chief's orders for the bad of boys, one boy breaks away the tribe and starts his own hunting group, where he is the chief. It is the same concept because the one boy, Jack, has self determination to govern his own hunting group and determine them as a separate tribe.
Concept 2: Physical-Political Boundaries
A physical-political boundary is an agreed-upon physical feature in the landscape that both sides of the group know to follow.
Later on in the book (also a movie), Jack and his clan establishes their own place in the island, creating a boundary with the mountain of the island to separate the two leaders and their followers. This shows a physical political boundary because the physical boundary, a mountain, separates the two groups which are keeping apart because of conflict between the two leaders with ¨politics¨. |
Concept 3: Superimposed Boundaries
Superimposed boundaries are forced on population of territory as a result of conflict between the two groups. So, they are imposed on the population in an extraneous manner.
The boundary between Castle Rock and island in the book is superimposed because the clan takes turns guarding the place to make sure no one outside their clan gets up there. In this way, their boundary is superimposed.
In the video, it is seen when the clan starts throwing rocks and Ralph that he is not welcome anymore and better keep to his side, or they'll do something bad.

Concept 4: Multinational State
A multinational state has more than one nationality in its borders, nationality being the status of belonging to a particular nation.
A personal example of mine is two places that I have lived at. I mostly grew up in the USA, which is a multinational state, with diverse nationalities like Indian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian, and a lot more other places where people migrated or originated from. |
Concept 5: Nation-State
A nation-state is a more specific word for a country that is independent and dominated by a relatively homogeneous culture group.
An example is India, the other place I have lived it, and where my nationality comes from. India is a nation-state because it's is filled with a majority of people of the same ethnicity, even religion. |
